Supporting food security

85% of the UAE’s food is imported, leaving the country vulnerable to external markets and supply issues. De-desertification using biochar is a way to improve the UAE’s agricultural productivity while sequestering carbon from the atmosphere.
Desert remediation to boost agriculture

A Healthier Earth is working with the UAE Government and private sector businesses to enhance the country’s food security, one of the biggest issues the region faces.

Using agricultural waste, we create biochar, a valuable soil amendment that increases the water and nutrients sandy soil can hold, while locking carbon out of the atmosphere.

Biochar improves the soil quality, creating healthy, stable and fertile soils in the desert.

This is enabling the UAE to expand its agricultural production with reduced water consumption, and has the potential to produce 4-5 tonnes of wheat per hectare of remediated desert.
